Mandarin is a tonal , monosyllabic and syllable-timed language which serves as the official spoken Chinese language and is used by the vast majority of Chinese speakers.
The term "Chinese" can be confusing for some people, as it encompasses both a language and a group of languages. In a narrow sense, "Mandarin" is the official spoken form of Chinese that is predominantly used in the Chinese-speaking world. In that case, Mandarin can be considered equivalent to Chinese. However, more broadly, "Chinese (spoken)" includes Mandarin and all its dialects, such as Cantonese, Hokkien, Shanghainese, and so on. In terms of writing, there is only one designation: Chinese. This is because all Chinese dialects, including Mandarin, share the same writing system of Chinese characters.
